Supported Domain Types on Ruby Dunes Servers

All Web hosting accounts at Ruby Dunes Hosting Service support the use of one or more domain names for addressing your site. Two types of domain names are supported. A Virtual Domain is a traditional stand-alone domain name such as example.com. This includes any domain from InterNIC or other international registries. A Vanity Domain is a third-level domain that ends in rubydunes.com, such as example.rubydunes.com. The only difference is that you will be charged registry fees for a Virtual Domain, whereas with a Vanity Domain no registry is involved. The implementation is otherwise identical.

Domains mapped to an account may be pointed to any directory. By default, they point to the top of the account's Web directory. You can host multiple sites in a single account by mapping additional domain names to subdirectories of the account's space, provided you will be maintaining all of the sites yourself.

If you are requesting a new Virtual Domain with a top-level domain under InterNIC's control (.COM, .NET, or .ORG), we will register the name for you with the process taking a sort time. If you are transferring such a domain to our servers, we will complete the process through the current or new registrar.

If you are requesting a Virtual Domain from a registry other than InterNIC, we will provide you with the appropriate technical contact and nameserver details, but the customer is responsible for completing the registration process and meeting all requirements of the registry they have chosen. The customer is also solely responsible for all registry fees. Ruby Dunes Hosting Service can handle registry fees for you when you enroll as a web hosting client, and bill you for these fees along with our regular monthly statement, registry fees must be pre-paid.

All e-mail addressed to domains hosted by Ruby Dunes Hosting Service comes to the mailbox of the hosting account. There is no additional charge for this global delivery and optional forwarding. With a Self Serve account or better, you can use advanced forwarding to separate out different addresses for different recipients. If you prefer to use separate mailboxes for different addresses, these are available and depending on your account level up to 50 (or more) individual mailboxes are possible.

Notes:

  • Any domain hosted by Ruby Dunes Hosting Service can be addressed with or without the www or ftp prefixes.
  • We provide only true domain hosting service which works with all browsers, not only with newer HTTP/1.1 browsers.
  • Virtual FTP is available at no additional charge for any domain on a Self Serve account or higher.
  • Without a domain name, your account's URL will be http://www.rubydunes.com/username/.
